A Web-Pocket Guide to the Major Mobile Phone Networks:

HISTORY: Orange Mobile Network "The Future's Bright, The Future's Orange" - now owned by France Telecom - also known as Everything Everywhere as a result of the incorporation of T-Mobile. Originally formed in April 1990 by a consortium including BaE; in 1991 Microtel was awarded a license to develop a mobile network in the UK, and in July 1991 Hutchinson Telecommunications (UK) Ltd acquired Microtel from BaE. France Telecom then took ownership from Hutchinson Whampoa, a move that freed Hutchinson to invest in the first UK 3G licence and set up rival network 3 (Three).
OUR VIEW: Orange is known a customer friendly network with a focus on service, with innovations such as Free Insurance (no longer available), UMA and truncated calls being credited. Until recently Orange was largely a 2.5G network with Edge technology that allowed for faster data speeds in certain location. Following the merger with T-Mobile, Orange will increase it's mast footprint two-fold leading to it becoming a real major network superpower over the next 24 months. Orange have recently invested heavily in 3G technology as well as having brought the i-phone to market, much to the displeasure of O2.
TOP FINAL WORD: Great Network, Great Coverage, Flexible Services, UMA is great, Worldwide Roaming Charges are very competitive - Great all round business and consumer network.

HISTORY: In 1985, Cellnet was launched as 60:40 venture between British Telecommunications and Securicor respectively. BT Cellnet demerged from BT and was relaunched on 1 May 2002 as O2. In October 2005, O2 agreed to be taken over by Telefónica, a Spanish telecommunications company, with a cash offer of £17.7 billion. O2 retained its name and continued to be based in the United Kingdom, keeping both the brand and the management team. Telefónica chose to keep their existing mobile phone operations in the rest of the world under the brand Movistar.
On 15 July 2009, O2 entered into the financial services industry with the launch of O2 Money. The launch marks O2s first stage at implementing financial services into mobile phones. On 18 November 2009, O2 announced a £500 million expansion and upgrade to its network throughout 2010, with the addition of 1500 new cell sites to support the increasing popularity of mobile broadband.
OUR VIEW: O2 historically has been known for its ability to handle data traffic during the early days of pushing data out via 2G networks. With the launch of the i-phone (originally exclusive to O2) the O2 network took on an even heavier data burden, hence the new investment. O2 is a good value data network with inclusive 'all you can eat' plans. A UK based operator, however owned in Spain.
TOP FINAL WORD: Great Network, Good Coverage, Good Data Tariffs, Roaming Data Bundles are good value.
